Kelcy Warren’s Acquisition Strategy Transformed a Texas Pipeline Company

Energy Transfer’s rise from a small East Texas operator to one of the largest pipeline networks in the world did not happen through organic growth alone. Kelcy Warren built the company deal by deal, each acquisition adding a new piece to an infrastructure map that now spans the entire country.

A Chronology of Bold Deals

The early acquisitions were relatively modest. Kelcy Warren and co-founder Ray Davis purchased a pipeline tied to the Barnett Shale in 2004, then added a Houston pipeline system for Gulf Coast access. The $7.9 billion Southern Union acquisition in 2011 was a different order of magnitude entirely. It brought in the Trunkline pipeline later converted to oil service and Florida Gas Transmission, the largest supplier of natural gas in Florida. Warren described that market position simply: “No one comes near that.”

In 2012, Energy Transfer acquired Sunoco, a deal that extended its reach into multiple hydrocarbon streams and gave it a presence in the Appalachian Marcellus play. The 2021 Enable acquisition opened access to Oklahoma’s Anadarko Basin and the Haynesville Shale. Two more deals followed in 2022. That same year, the Lotus Midstream acquisition gave Warren something he had long wanted: a link from Cushing, Oklahoma, to Midland and the Gulf Coast. “I’ve always been envious of those able to move liquids from Cushing to Midland to the Gulf Coast,” Warren said. “Now, we’ve solved that problem.”

Growth Without Fear

Warren’s willingness to move quickly and decisively has sometimes unsettled financial markets. Large acquisitions that appeared risky to outside analysts rarely felt that way to him. “Nothing ever seemed risky for me,” Warren has said. “It just seemed right.” For Kelcy Warren, each transaction was less a gamble than a calculated read on where energy markets were heading and where Energy Transfer needed to be positioned to serve them.
